My Experiences With (K)Ubuntu Hardy Heron Beta

April 13th, 2008 by Rishabh Mishra

Having managed to triple-boot Windows Vista (I keep it for the media center remote, as I still can’t figure out how to configure LIRC), Kubuntu 7.04, and OpenSUSE 10.3, I decided that it would be safe for me to test out Hardy Heron, as I use OpenSUSE more than Kubuntu.

Well, it sure ain’t a beta in the style of Gmail. The upgrade took a while, which didn’t bother me as this was to be expected. When I finally rebooted, I was greeted with the console login screen. The X server probably didn’t start. Being capable of getting basic tasks done in the terminal, this didn’t bother me either.

Starting the X server was easy, but I ended up with GNOME, not KDE. Not being discouraged, I simply open up Konsole and type in “startkde”.

Well, I ended up with something of the sort below:

The thumbnail doesn’t do a good job of showing the important parts, which is why I have a slightly modified image with the important parts below:

Yup. I have GNOME and KDE running at the same time. A bit odd, but in the end, I managed to get it running. KDE doesn’t run perfectly, as I have to run Metacity after KDE has finished loading. GNOME and Xfce work fine, though.

Ha ! You just started a WHOLE NEW Window Manager !!!
"KGNOME" I whould call it that :0)
It should end the war between K.D.E. and Gnome users !!!

    KGNOME, Ha!

I'm not sure why I used Metacity instead of Kwin when I got KDE kinda-working. I was probably tired or something.
